JONAH HUNT ILLUSTRATION

 PROJECTS

From October 2025 to January 2026 I worked on a project I had planned the previous May after watching Revenge of the Sith in the cinema for its 20th anniversary. This was of course redesigning the poster, trying to capture how I remember the film; depicting elements that I feel have been wrongly absent from previous posters and emitting elements that I feel are inaccurate. At the time, Episode III was thought to be the final film in the Star Wars saga, so naturally had a vast marketing campaign with a focus on the franchise’s iconography. Notably, Darth Vader. This was the film that promised the transformation of the lead character, Anakin Skywalker, to the titular villain (and the fight between himself and his mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi). This was a hugely effective strategy at the time as it was the part of the story audiences were most looking forward to, but as I was coming into this personal project retrospectively, I had the hindsight of the film holistically.

Plans & Initital Sketches

There were a few components that I didn’t end up including. It came down to lack of space and prioritising characters with more screen-time, as that was the indicator of the size they would be in the hierarchy. As previously mentioned, what I notice about the existing posters for the film is that they mainly depict the final act. This that characters like General Grievous get forgotten and Chancellor Palpatine pre-scarred. As the main antagonist, he performs most of his manipulations before the final act and his duel with Mace Windu, so I found it far more faithful to depict him how he appears for the majority the runtime.

My sketch was quite rough, but enough to viusalise the composition I was aiming for.  You can see the process of each of these characters over on my Instagram page where I went from a pencil sketch, to a watercolour wash and then coloured pencil rendering. I hadn’t used the technique of a wash with pencil on top much before, but I knew that it would benefit the lighting and overall palette to keep it all fairly consistant.

Process

Across its production, I illustrated three posters for this student film. The first being a concept poster; the second showcasing the cast; and the third to be the definitive image to accompany the film for festivals. The final one was clearly the best at representing the identity and tone of the film due to it being completed by the time I began working on it in June 2025. For me, what benefitted this one the most was knowing the outfits each character was wearing. I leaned into those choices of making them identifiable with one main bold colour for each of them. There was a lot of collaboration between myself and the producer in terms of composition, colour, lettering etc. and I think together we really captured the essence of the film.

Each one of these was drawn with marker pens, fineliners and coloured pencils on A2 sheets of paper. They took some time to produce, but was certainly worth it as they carry much of the visual content of the poster itself.
